why do you get depressed
Sadhguru: We need to understand what depression is. What happens to you when you feel down? Basically, you expected something to happen and it didn't happen. You expected someone or something to go your way, or the world or destiny to go your way, and that's not the case. In other words, you're just against what's happening; that's all. Maybe you're against a person, a situation, or maybe against life itself. Consequently, the depression will be deeper and deeper.
Why are you against something? Just because things didn't go the way you wanted. Why should everyone go your way? Please know that the world doesn't go your way. Or you haven'tzBin the creator or you have notassumption, or both, and you have an oversensitive ego. That's why you become depressed.
what happens when you are depressed
Depression is cynical and deeply self-destructive. Depressed people only get hurt more. Killing does not necessarily mean physical killing. For a man who goes out with a sword and kills someone, his ego isn't as sensitive, doesn't need as much nurturing as the ego of a depressed man. The violent man can be solved very easily. Did you see that on the street? When people get into an argument, when there's a man with a little wisdom who just treats them well, those people who are trying to kill each other one moment will leave and become friends and the next moment they'll leave. . But that's not the case with depressed people. He will wear it for life. Whether they knowingly do it or not, these people continue to sharpen their knives and carve out their own hearts. Why would a person constantly hurt themselves? It's usually to get sympathy. For a very depressed person, normal compassion is not enough; someone should bleed with it.
..what hurts inside? The mind and inner nature cannot be harmed. It's only the ego that gets hurt.
Now what is there in you that can be hurt? If I hit your body with a stick, the body will be hurt; that is different. Otherwise, what is hurting inside you? The mind and inner nature cannot be harmed. It's only the ego that gets hurt. When you say, "I want to grow," it means trampling on your ego and moving on.
Use depression to grow
You can turn any emotion into a creative force in your life. If your sadness reminds you that you are incomplete, that's good; Use your sadness to grow. Do you want to turn that sadness into anger or into love and compassion? When you are sad it is very easy to become compassionate. It's already a kind of energy dissipating; You can use it for greater resolution that will guide you to your maximum well-being. But if you get sad, if you get irritated and angry and think the whole world is wrong, you're a fool.
The unfortunate reality for people right now is that their humanity will only function if they are maimed by life. For most people, growing up will not happen without knowing sadness and pain. Otherwise they never understand what is happening to them and to everyone else around them.
..if you get sad, if you get irritated and angry and think the whole world is wrong, you're a fool.
In yoga, depression is treated at the level of the body, mind and energies. When the necessary balance and serenity is achieved in the physical, mental and energetic body, it is natural to be blissful. In a blissful being, depression can never exist.
q: Sadhguru, you say that bliss is natural, but isn't depression also a natural emotion in a human being?
Sadhguru: Once you declare that depression is a natural process, there is no way out. As a child, you took it for granted that you were happy, not depressed. Don't explain that depression is natural. Depression means that you cannot contain the exuberance of life. It even happens in your body. When you are depressed, even the physical body breaks down. The life within you is not exuberant, it has simply sunk and lost its exuberance because you are not doing the right thing with it. They force too much external nonsense inwards. you haven't done anything to yourselfkeep your vital energies high.
The source of the depression
Depression is a kind of torment. If you've become torment and not ecstasy, it's because a large part of your life energy is wasting awaycompulsively, not consciously. It happens in response to external situations. As soon as you get upset, it's normal to get depressed because external situations are never 100 percent under your control. There are so many things happening in the world; When you're reacting obsessively, it's natural to lose yourself and become unhappy. The more exposed you are to life, the unhappier you will become.

What we call a spiritual process is just that: not just fixing the objective aspect of your life, but addressing the subjectivity of who you are.
People can cause depression in their mood in many ways. If you take away what they think is valuable, they become depressed. The tragedy of many people, especially in affluent societies, is that they have everything and yet have nothing. Depression means that a certain hopelessness has taken root somewhere. If you go to a very poor village in India, they are really impoverished, but you will see happy faces because they hope that tomorrow everything will be better. In affluent societies, that hope is gone. The Depression has set in because everything that can be used externally has been repaired.
A poor man may think, "If I get a new pair of shoes tomorrow, I'll be fine." When you receive a new pair of shoes, you will walk like a king with great joy on your face because you have hope; the exterior is not fixed yet. In wealthy societies, the outside is fixed but the inside is not fixed, so there is hopelessness and depression. There is food, there is housing, there is clothing, there is everything, but still something is wrong. You just don't know what.
As we work on the outside, we must also repair on the inside. Then the world would be beautiful. What we call a spiritual process is just that: not just fixing the objective aspect of your life, butpay attention to the subjectivity of who you are.
Depression seeks attention
Unless you have very strong emotions or very intense thoughts about something, you cannot become depressed. It's just that you create thoughts and emotions that work against you, not for you. So you are strong enough to inflict depression on yourself. I say this not out of concern for the disease itself or lack of compassion, but because that is the nature of what happens to a human being.
Most depression is self-inflicted. Some people are pathologically ill; it's not your fault. But almost everyone else can go insane because the line between sanity and insanity is pretty thin. People keep pushing. When you get angry, you push the limit. You push the limits of sanity and go insane for a period of time and come back.
You have incentives in your life to get sick. Since childhood, he received maximum care only when he fell ill. When you were happy, the adults yelled at you. When you screamed for joy, they screamed back. If you were down they would go boo-boo, boo-boo. When you were a child, physical illness was good because you received attention from your mother, father, and everyone around you. You didn't have to go to school that day. So you've learned the art of becoming physically ill. But once you get married, you learn the art ofbecome insane! If you want to attract attention, you can sit in a corner and look depressed. People will pay attention to you. So if you keep playing this game, one day you won't be able to cross the border back. On this day you are clinically ill.
How can you overcome depression?
Physical activity is a very important part of maintaining chemical balance in the system. In recent generations, our level of physical activity has decreased significantly. Therefore, it becomes difficult to maintain the chemical balance in the system. Depression is just one manifestation of this. Some sit in a corner and sulk. Others who are bipolar can become violent. The usual approach is to calm them down with chemicals, pills, or injections. This destroys the potential of the individual.
One of the easiest and best ways to achieve balance is to get plenty of physical activity in a natural environment, ideally from an early age.
One of the easiest and best ways to achieve balance is to get plenty of physical activity in a natural environment, ideally from an early age. Another aspect is to be aware of itGame with the five elementsof nature: earth, water, air, sunlight or fire and space. Another factor is the type of food you eat: overly processed foods should be avoided. Another factor is the lack of emotional security that modern generations suffer from. They can't really invest their emotions in anyone because no one will be around for long.
In summary, the increase in depression is mainly due to lifestyle changes. Eating too much, not being active enough, not being exposed to nature, not having contact with the five elements, not having emotional security: these are the main reasons why depression is so prevalent in today's world. If we take care of these aspects, we can significantly reduce the incidence and prevalence of depression and other mental disorders.
