Paddy Pimblett loves turning skeptics into believers (2023)

Paddy Pimblett has one piece of advice for any fan wanting to get their picture taken with the hottest UFC sensation: say the magic word.

"Say 'please,'" Pimblett told UFC.com when we visited him in Liverpool. "Good manners cost nothing."

You'll be hard pressed to find another fighter outside of a cover photo who has the kind of buzz around him that Pimblett garnered in his first year on the UFC roster. To that end, there are few fighters competing for belts who can cultivate the kind of lightning rod reaction to each of their actions like Pimblett.

Since his UFC debut in September 2021, Pimblett has submitted each of his three fights (one KO, two submissions) and earned a performance bonus each time. He provided the most electrifying pre-fight atmosphere on both of the London promotion's 2022 stops, and his post-fight interviews in the Octagon spread like wildfire. During his final microphone stint, he had perhaps his greatest impact when he shared the news of his friend's death and implored men to seek help to support his mental health.

Along the way, Pimblett operated with a smile and a quick wit like his fame. He arrived at the UFC saying he was well prepared for the fanfare through his experience with the Cage Warriors and has been recognized on the streets of Liverpool since he was 21. Still, he admits the notoriety "has reached a new stratosphere" in the past 12 months.

"I just take it in stride," Pimblett said. "A lot of people wouldn't be able to handle it. That's how I know I was born for this. I was born for this position because my head doesn't fall off. I'm not going to start doing crazy things, but that's just me and that's all.

Talk to Pimblett long enough and you'll hear him say "it's just me" at least a few times, but it's less of a crutch for an interview and more of a straightforward conclusion.

So far, this has only come true. Whether arm in arm with teammate and UFC flyweight knockout Molly McCann, celebrating her wins, or dancing through the crowd on her way to the Octagon, Pimblett is a consistently vibrant and magnetic presence.

This rise to fame also comes with problems. Pimblett's head coach in Next Generation MMA, Paul Rimmer, admits that the reception his student receives leaves him impressed, whether he's walking the streets of Liverpool, New York or San Diego. Everyone wants a piece of The Baddy. When it comes to Pimblett's peers in the MMA world, everyone seems to have an opinion about his skills or the now infamous post-fight eating adventures.

While this might sound like an exciting experience, Pimblett has shown no signs of it so far. He's got a podcast, an active YouTube channel, and multiple sponsorship commitments all pulling towards him, and he still hasn't blinked. Several film crews hang around the Next Generation MMA gym every day, and Pimblett himself is known to carry a microphone every day. For him, everything is just "standard".

He hasn't even gotten too tired of the media onslaught that comes at him, especially when a fight is scheduled. While some, if not most, fighters have a certain level of enthusiasm when answering similar questions when training for a fight, Pimblett resists the notion of media fatigue.

"You have to think of everyone," he said. "You can't just think about the person you're talking to. You have to think about everyone in the situation. One person isn't going to listen to the interview I did last week and answered the question they're dying to answer (right now). You may not listen. I'm not going to say, 'Hey, you idiot, go listen to last week's interview.' I'm just going to answer the question."

He also understands that if he can't deliver the goods to the Octagon, all the excitement is gone. While some might profile her and cash in on the biggest fights for the fastest route to a UFC title shot, Pimblett sees a long ascent up the lightweight ladder for himself. While his popularity may have some fans classifying Pimblett as more of a veteran, Pimblett himself believes he won't make the top 15 until 2024 and doesn't see a title until late 2025 at the earliest.

Part of that is patience in the process, but part of that is the fact that 155 is widely considered one of the deepest in the sport.

"Lightweight is the best division in the sport," he stated. "Always will be. It's not like in those other departments where they're too skinny. I have to win six fights, seven fights before I fight someone in the rankings. I know that and I don't deny it, like, 'Oh, I'm going to fight him the next day. next, I'm going to fight him next' because I won't."

After yet another tour of America and a stop in Ireland to support a teammate's fight, Pimblett is back in Liverpool training for his newly announced fight against Jared Gordon at UFC 282. In 2023 he plans to marry his wife. longtime partner, Laura, and expects two fights. at any end of the year.

Pimblett's impact on the UFC scene is still in its infancy, though reverberations point to a long time in the game. He knows his rapid rise and the fanfare around him might upset some people, but he also has the confidence to back up the words he spoke before fighting in the brightest spotlight.

"I turned doubters into believers," Pimblett said. "I've been doing this for years and I'll keep doing it because a lot of people still doubt me. You're still thinking, 'Oh, he's not that good. He's not. He's not.' Wait until I have a golden title around my waist.
