Illegal Acts/Criminal Violations

  • Giving or accepting a title on which the assignment has been signed without the buyer's name being entered is a criminal offense. Georgia Code 40-3-91(c) states: “Any person, business, or corporation who renders or accepts a blank assigned certificate of title shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, shall be fined not more than $100.00 or imprisoned for a term not to exceed 30 days for acceptance or delivery of each assigned blank certificate of title.”
  • Any person who makes a false statement on any application to register a vehicle in this state will be guilty of false oath, whether or not the oath was sworn.
  • It is illegal to remove or transfer a license plate from the vehicle for which the license plate was issued.

Note: The vehicle owner may transfer their valid Georgia license plate from a vehicle they no longer own to another vehicle they purchase/acquire (both require the same class of license plate) after the license plate is successfully transferred to the Georgia registration office. county.

  • Any person who mutilates, erases, defaces, alters, alters, or obscures any number, letter, character, county name decal, or other marking on any license plate issued under the motor vehicle registration laws of this state shall be guilty of a misdemeanor penal.

  • Every motor vehicle must always have the plate issued for it firmly attached to it so that it does not wobble and is clearly visible. The license plate must be attached to the rear of the vehicle.

Exception: The license plate that is issued for a tractor used as an itinerant plant for pulling and transporting loads independently, must display the license plate that has been granted on the front of the vehicle. It will be the obligation of the driver of any vehicle to keep the license plate legible at all times. No plate shall be covered with any material unless the material is colorless and transparent. No device that obstructs or prevents the clear display and legibility of a license plate shall be placed on the rear of any motor vehicle that is required to be registered with the state. Any person who violates these provisions of the law shall be guilty of a crime.

  • No person shall display on the rear of a motor vehicle any non-Georgia issued permanent or temporary license plate that is intended to resemble a Georgia-issued license plate.
